There are no problems with the US financial system.

The US Federal Reserve Board is doing just fine. The dollar is the world’s reserve currency and likely to remain so as far as the eye can see. The US economy is doing great with just 3.4% unemployment, the lowest in more than 50 years. The US infrastructure is being repaired, the great repair work since Eisenhower was president. Inflation is only 3%, the lowest in the world’s industrial countries.
The Open Banking Standard is a framework for creating, sharing and accessing banking data in a simple and fast way. This one forces established firms to compete with smaller and newer banks. It can offer us lower costs, better technology and customer service.
I'll give you some of my favourites instead...

Microfinance is still hot... or should be!
Financing the next generation of renewables is hot and will now get hotter
Pricing externalities will remain hot until the planet starts to cool
Disaster and recovery funding and hedging and Value at Risk (VaR) models and applications will become hotter still as climate change kicks in ever harder
Group think and the herd instinct's role in pricing, financing and investing remains a fascination for me. The psychology of investment and economic management remains ripe for further work
Understanding correlation, diversification and correlation risk remains at least warm-to-hot, be it in terms of currencies, assets, derivatives, markets or instruments. Or anything really...
Crunching Big Data and anything to do with digging deep and pulling out the real/hidden trends, be they market-based or criminal or whatever
Dispersion trading, delta hedging, options returns and anything too complex to explain is probably warm-to-hot
Index volatility, or guessing from say the current options data just how sick the market will be tomorrow, next month, next year or whenever is another big data application worth a look-see
Stochastic volatility is another computing task related to options modeling and probably needs further work (don't we all)
Understanding and managing oligopolistic markets especially with regard to...
International trade theory, free trade and protectionism including objectives such as...
Capturing a fairer share of taxation from multi-tentacled international corporations who craftily "play the field" for incentives to invest
The ever-improving use of autonomics, artificial intelligence and bots in economic/financial modeling (and real market applications) can't cool off
Efficiency and reach of taxation collection will continue to impact financing and financial trading, as will.

The deeper, richer implications of pervasive computing and the mobile internet era, together growing very, very hot.
