I feel that doing a postdoc is an immensely valuable training experience for anyone who plans fto pursue a career in research. The reasons are that a postdoc enables you to go through the cycle again, of starting a new project, learning a new area of literature, and becoming a leading expert in a topic, and thus provides an excellent opportunity to hone your skills and prepare you for life as an independent scientist. A postdoc also exposes you to a different management style and research group culture, thus broadening your experience base for when you are running a group of your own. But most importantly, a postdoc provides an opportunity to broaden your skills to encompass a new area, or even a new field, that is complementary to your PhD work. Basically, within 2–3 years, you can achieve an additional PhD’s-worth of knowledge and abilities in a new area. A well chosen combination of PhD and postdoctoral research areas can provide you with a broad and distinctive skill set that uniquely equips you to take on particular areas of study as an independent researcher. Finality, doing a postdoc is the last time in you career when you can focus exclusively on your own intellectual development, and for many scientists is the most meaningful and influential part of their training as a scientist.
