Best jobs for women in Canada

Women usually chose nursing and other medical positions as their first pick for a career. Today, however, you can pursue any career path you want which is one of the great benefits of living in Canada. Women, however, often gravitate towards administrative positions such as insurance, but we have female truck drivers, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, engineers, and just about every other career path you can choose. It has been proven that women often do better in small business ventures than men as they are less prone to taking big gambles that don’t always pay off. I will not tell you that the ‘glass ceiling’ has broken yet, as most of the CEO’s of large companies are still mostly men, but our latest Prime Minister is working towards creating a better gender equality and practices what he preaches by having Canada’s first gender balanced cabinet…which by the way, is another career choice to consider…politics!

Getting a job in Canada from overseas is EXTREMELY difficult…impossible for most people. (I am assuming you are overseas somewhere based on your other question, which is asking about the best country for you to settle in Europe with ‘low immigration laws and low living cost.

Often times, new immigrants like me tend to think that we can pick up our jobs from the level we left them off in our home countries, which is not the reality in Canada for most of the immigrants.

Also, the Canadian government can’t guarantee white collar jobs to its own citizens so, it can’t obviously guarantee the freshly landed immigrants the same opportunities. But what it guarantees is the SAME RIGHT for the immigrants to compete with Canadians for the job

If by ‘low immigration laws’ you mean low admission standards for immigration, Canada does not qualify. MANY people want to come to Canada and there is a lot of competition for the spaces available.

Also, Canada certainly does not have a low cost of living. It is an expensive place to live with a very competitive job market.

As for jobs…an employer in Canada cannot hire a foreign worker without first proving that no one in Canada can fill the same job. Jobs in Canada go to Canadians and permanent residents first. An employer is not allowed to hire from overseas without first completing an expensive and time-consuming process called a LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment).

Canada has 36 million residents and more than half the workforce has post-secondary degrees. Therefore, there are many highly trained workers in Canada. That is one reason the job market is so competitive - for people without good skills, it is difficult to survive. (I’m not saying you and your girlfriend do not have marketable skills…I don’t know…but I do know that the Canadian job market is challenging.)

In order to be legally able to work in Canada you must either have a work permit or be a Permanent Resident.

To get a work permit, you need a job offer. See note above re. difficulty of getting a job offer.

There are a few short-term programs for temporary workers…caregivers, seasonal agriculture workers, and international experience for young people but those all have specific requirements. EVERYTHING has requirements - no one just ‘moves’ to Canada.

But one should keep in mind that it’s a different culture. It takes time to learn a new culture and how to work within that culture.

Some people understand it. They take a job - even if it is a lesser job - that will give them work experience in Canada while they continue to assimilate. Some do not understand it and either return home…muttering about “Canadian experience”…or stay in Canada, bitter and disappointed.
