Banking as a career

These days Banking is a profession that offers you a huge variety of opportunities as well as the possibility of rapid career progression, in banking one can reach from Probationary Officer level to a General Manager level, good pay, and extra advantages, which we refer to as "Perks"."Career in banking" is such a diverse term. If you want to get a job in SBI or PSU banks or any other bank like Federal, South Indian or KVB then a mere graduation is enough. B.Tech don't carry any weightage. You can write the PO exams, get a job and subsequently pass JAIIB and CAIIB. This will be more than enough for your entire career.

If you want to join the likes of JP Morgan Chase or HSBC or want to be in specific functions like Treasury or ALM,then it would be wise to consider doing MBA Finance from top 10 colleges.

Sadly you won't make the world any safer or worse by doing this.If talking to people and appeasing them, on a daily basis is not what you dream, then steer clear of bank coaching centres. The best way to break into banking is to have degrees in different concentrations.

If you go undergrad finance don’t get an MBA in finance. Mix in an economics, management, or even applied mathematics.

High level bankers don’t want to spend time explaining everything to you. Your undergrad is not that important and high level bankers want to see more of your advance degrees and internships.

oThe best thing you can do is make good grades and do as many internships and extracurricular activities you can. Charity work, unpaid internships, habitat for humanity. They want to see that it’s not all about the money and you don’t mind working and putting the time in.

Everybody is different and as long as you are willing to start low and work hard you will be fine. Bank job is considered “stressful" because it deals in “money", the most sensitive factor of any individual's life.

Bank is a custodian of public money. It should be vigilant enough to protect the interests of public who have utmost good faith on banks. It is not like a merchant who weighs 50 gm more or 50 gm less of his merchandise. Bank has to return exactly the same amount that the public deposited with it. As the saying goes, bank expends thousands of rupees to trace out the difference of even a single paisa.

Bank is a representative of government transactions also. If it goes wrong, the bank has to answer the government for any mishandling. Utmost care is required on it making the bank stressful.

The intervention of auxiliary products and the introduction of products based rewards also is an additional reason for stressful life of a banker as he has to compete that target also along with the scheduled banking works.

Bank has provided its staff with welfare and recouperation activities which is used by only a meagre percentage of staff as major portion cannot spare time for this. It also results in a stressful mentality of the staff.

Inspite of all these stresses, a banker always remains honest and loyal to the institution (exception is there on every aspect) which is the “soul" of the success of the banks. There are various banking courses after graduation and few of them are provided by popular banks themselves. The other courses are offered by masters in business administration colleges. If you want to pursue bank courses after graduation, another route is to prepare for Bank PO examinations

Looking forward to your response also let me know if this was helpful or not.
